Contemporary Extension, Hastings

This contemporary extension reimagines a traditional Hastings home as a calm, light-filled retreat. The design opens up the rear of the property to create a generous, socially focused living space that responds to the movement of natural light throughout the day. A series of deliberately positioned rooflights trace the sun’s path, capturing morning light and drawing it deep into the plan, while soft afternoon tones animate the interior surfaces.

A material-led approach anchors the project — vertical cladding lends rhythm and texture to the exterior, while a pared-back interior palette creates a sense of stillness and clarity. Exposed and expressed structural elements are celebrated rather than concealed, revealing the honesty of the building’s construction and contributing to its quiet architectural character.

From the earliest concept sketches through to technical delivery on site, we worked closely with the client to ensure the design intent was carried through every stage. This hands-on process and collaborative process enabled the project to be realised true to vision, with careful attention to detail carried through to completion.
